LED lens for chip‐on‐board LED with suitable beam pattern has been designed and fabricated for direct‐lit backlight unit (BLU). Side‐emitting beam pattern with peaks at ±60–70° shows larger value by the definition of point spread function compared with those of PLCC type LEDs. LED color shift criteria Δ y less than 0.03 and central intensity less than 40% for BLU cosmetic requirement were determined. By means of this approach, thickness of backlight unit for light mixing can be reduced to 8 mm without sacrifice of the optical performance; uniformity performance of 87.8 % was obtained.
