An optimized energy efficient design of a Hybrid LED backlight is presented. This incorporates side‐emitting LEDs distributed equally in a two‐dimensional array across the backlight area and embedded in a multi‐layer light‐guide structure. Good energy efficiency is achieved by: 1. LEDs embedded in the light‐guide to remove air‐guide optical coupling loses, 2. Very short average optical path lengths (cm 's) to minimize optical loss in the light‐guide polymer, 3. Integrated high performance surface light extraction features to minimize surface scattering but achieve good extracted light beam profile. The combination of these features produces a high optical efficiency (>90%) and thin LED backlight. The full results from the design and manufacture of an optimized 40″ demonstrator will be presented.
