A new light source, energy‐efficient‐excitation plasma lamp, has been developed in order to improve the performance of LCD backlights and general lighting. The efficiency of lamps and the life time were found to be superior to those in the regular fluorescent lamps or regular CCFLs. The operation principles of plasma lamps, based on the improved electrical energy ionization of the vaporized materials, were described. Very wide operating range of temperature, high efficiency, and long life time of linear plasma lamps will create diverse applications from LCD backlight to general lighting.
