A method of despeckle for a laser illuminated microdisplay is fabricated using a large core diameter optical fiber with significant scatter properties. The multiple modes set up in the fiber, along with scatter, reduce the coherence in the laser light enough to yield a projected image that is perceived to be speckle free.
