The backlight in this paper comprises a total internal reflection (TIR) lens, main light guide, LEDs, and optical films. We gained 40% brightness enhancement and 83% uniformity benefit with the backlight using TIR compared with the conventional backlight. It was found that TIR lens internally reflects the light on each TIR surface twice instead of lighting out directly and the brightness and the uniformity are improved. with this backlight using TIR lens, the bright‐line which was present in the conventional backlight was also disappeared by TIR effect occurred on the each reflection surface.
