A 32 inch high contrast LCD TV using LED backlight is demonstrated. The LCD TV dynamically manipulates the brightnessr of individual LEDs to largely enhance the display contrast and reduce the power consumption. Preliminary results indicate the contrast can be up to 125,000:1, with maximum luminance of 500 cd/m 2 . Compared with the static LED backlight, up to 70% of the power can be saved depending on the average picture level (APL) of the image.
