The effect of multiple internal reflections on a perfectly compensated black state of a LCD is studied. We found the previously unexplained wavelength dependence of light leakage is caused by the interference of the ordinary and extraordinary waves, and they could place a limit on the performance of liquid crystal devices used as displays and optical switches.
