LCD backlights have to fulfill somewhat ambivalent requirements: high luminance and uniform emission. Utilizing the characteristics of diffraction gratings, we have developed micro‐patterned optical films which provide both highly collimated emission and good uniformity. The design strategies, optical characteristics and high‐precision patterning of the films are reported.
