We describe different innovations of a diffuser plate for a direct‐type Backligh Unit (BLU), that allow both the reduction of the number of light sources ‐resulting in significant cost reduction‐ and a more compact BLU. Moreover, we show that the diffusing foil can be removed from the conventional optical stack.
