We investigated the horizontal alignment characteristics such as surface morphology, pretilt angle, and polar and azimuthal anchoring energy by treating the thin film surfaces coated with organic alignment materials by ion beam. We changed the energy and incident angle of ion beam. We also fabricated an in‐plane switching (IPS) cell by ion beam alignment. It shows similar voltage‐transmittance characteristics to those of a rubbed cell and better dark state.
