We have developed a new technique to form homeotropic liquid crystal layer on film substrate without alignment layer, and prepared the compensation film for IPS LCDs. This compensation film was composed of a uni‐axial or bi‐axial film substrate and a thin liquid crystal polymer layer. This compensation film provided wide viewing angle characteristics for IPS LCD.
