Psychophysical experiments were conducted with thirty‐seven observers, who were asked to match reduced brightness with increased apparent contrast of complex stimuli. The experimental results demonstrate the reciprocal relation between brightness and contrast. This finding leads to novel approaches to low‐power and high dynamic range applications in TFT‐LCDs.
