The development of a LED projection engine based on a three t‐ LCD panel architecture is discussed. The compactness and optical efficiency have been optimized in view of portable applications. The optical design parameters influencing the projector brightness as well as the image quality (uniformity) are discussed. We show how the contrast can be significantly increased by using a wavelength selective reflection screen. The projector delivers 50 lm to screen at SVGA resolution. The optical engine has a consumption of 18 W for a volume of 190 cc.
