Light emitting diode is becoming a popular illumination source for projection displays, but the light collection efficiency is still limited. This paper proposes a large size LED chip to replace a small chip array to reduce the overall apparent emission area so that the light collection efficiency can be increased, especially for low system etendue application. The performance of large LED chips has shown that there is no scaling up effect on luminous efficiency and emission profile.
