Abstract IPS (In Plane Switching)‐LCD technologies originally developed for LCD monitor and TV applications are applied to mobile applications. Advantage of the IPS mode over other optical modes even in the mobile application is quantitatively clarified. Transflective mode as well as transmissive mode with higher aperture ratio is developed. Furthermore, to improve users' convenience, ambient light sensing system and viewing angle control system are developed.
