We demonstrated a spontaneously formed multidomain structure for wideviewing liquid crystal displays(LCDs). The multidomain structure was obtained by inserting an alignment film having periodically embedded patterns into the LC cell. Since the suggested alignment film has no morphological modulation on the LC interface, the reorientation of the LC director is precisely controlled by the electric field distortion effect without any geometric distortion effect on the surface. The symmetrical distortion of an applied electric field enhances wideviwing characteristics.
