Luminescence and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation properties of Ca 4 YO(BO 3 ) 3 doped with the Eu 3+ or Tb 3+ ion are investigated. In Ca 4 YO(BO 3 ) 3 : Eu 3+ , the excitation band appears strongly at 250 nm with ca. 100 nm bandwidth. The mercury discharge plasma line at 254 nm can be absorbed efficiently by Ca 4 YO(BO 3 ) 3 : Eu 3+ , and the resultant emission at ca. 611 nm makes it an excellent red phosphor for lighting applications. The Tb 3+ ion in Ca 4 YO(BO 3 ) 3 also emits efficiently green at 547 nm similar to that in oxides with UV the excitation of the allowed 4f → 5d transition.
