We compared the angular emission of in‐plane switching and vertically‐aligned liquid crystal medical displays. Using measured luminance data, we simulated the effect of different viewing directions on the visibility of subtle signals. We verified our predictions using human observer experiments that quantify the degradation in detection performance.
