Discharge characteristics of Xe‐Ne‐H 2 gas mixtures are investigated for the improvement of ac plasma display panel. Small amount of H 2 addition to Xe‐Ne gas mixtures results in lowering of the firing voltage. When H 2 gas is mixed 0.01% of the total volume, the firing voltage is lowered by about 10%, and the aging time become bellow 1/10, while the luminous efficacy is almost unchanged compared to those of no H 2 added gas mixtures. Surface modification of the MgO surface is suggested.
