— SpectraVue™, a new system to enhance liquid‐crystal‐display (LCD) viewing‐angle performance, has been developed. The addition of SpectraVue components to any LCD greatly expands the usable viewing cone, resulting in significant improvements in contrast ratio, color purity, and gray‐scale fidelity. Contrast and color inversions are also completely eliminated at all angles. With SpectraVue‐modified LCDs, contrast ratios of greater than 75:1 have been demonstrated at ±45° (horizontal and vertical) on an active‐matrix LCD and greater than 10:1 on STN‐LCDs over the same range. The operating principles of the key components of this new design will be described.
