— Two members of the hexaaluminate family of phosphors, BaMg 2 Al 16 O 27 :Eu 2+ and MgAl 11 O 17.5 :Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ , were synthesized at low temperatures by hydrothermal reaction at 800°C and 50–70 MPa water pressure. Well‐crystallized single‐phase products were obtained with a particle size in the range of 1–2 μm. Good luminescence intensities were obtained under near‐UV excitation, but luminescence intensities under vacuum UV (plasma display) excitation are less than observed for phosphors synthesized by high‐temperature processing. These compounds appear to be a more ordered stacking arrangement and are crystallographically different phases from those produced when the same compositions are fired at high temperatures.
