— The genesis and evolution of the concept of active matrix and its reduction to practice at Westinghouse Labs in the early '70s is recounted from a personal viewpoint by the author, who was manager of the thin‐film projects at the time. The story is continued beyond Westinghouse's abandonment of the project to the formation in 1981 of Panelvision, the first AMLCD company, and ends in 1985 when Panelvision was sold and Japanese companies assumed their present dominant position in the market. A postscript expresses views of the author on the future of active‐matrix displays.
