— Area of interest (AOI) display systems provide an approach to maximizing the effective resolution of a display system for a given quantity of image generation resources. Various AOI display concepts have been developed over the years, relying mainly on optically combined high and low resolution areas. This paper presents an alternative approach in which matched image generation and display system designs provide a single image containing regions of differing resolution. The first of these “dual acuity” visual systems with CAE's MAXVUE™ image generator (IG) was delivered to the customer in the summer of 1994, and is now in operation as the visual system for a tactical aircraft simulator.
