— Gas‐discharge displays or plasma displays (PDPs) are leading candidates for large‐screen direct‐view displays. However, they are still expensive and have lower luminance and luminous efficacy than is considered desirable for the hoped‐for HDTV consumer market. We have developed the memory‐sheet PDP (MSP) to solve these problems. It is a hybrid ac‐dc display: addressing is accomplished by dc discharges, while ac discharges provide memory and, by virtue of a high sustain frequency, high luminance.
