— Innovations affect the lives of many people, whereas inventions, although important, are chiefly felt by specialists. Graceful growth is a path by which an innovation becomes successful in the marketplace. Lifetime employment, as practiced in Japan, can encourage both innovation and graceful growth. A multi‐layered hierarchical structure can inhibit innovation and graceful growth. Multiple formal presentations can impair the vitality of an organization. The growth of LCD technology is an example of graceful growth; the story of Asahi's Super Dry beer is an illustration of the virtues of lifetime‐employment policies.
