A flat lamp is developed for an 18‐in.‐diagonal LCD backlighting, using 8 electric‐field‐coupled discharge tubes. All the tubes can be driven with a single inverter circuit. Luminance, efficacy, and input power are 3500cd/m 2 , 34 lm/W, and 35W when the lamp is driven at 5.24MHz and 790V.
