“T” shaped electrodes, which are independently patterned in each discharge cell, were developed for high luminous efficiency and high definition co‐planar type AC‐PDPs. A 1.0 lm/W of luminous efficiency in a 50‐inch diagonal XGA/wide panel with 0.286 mm of sub‐pixel pitch and 768V×1,260H of total pixels were achieved. With this panel structure, the maximum tolerance of the alignment error between the “T” shaped electrode and barrier rib was made clear to be 0.03 mm by the investigation of display voltage margin. This structure allows us to improve the luminous efficiency by a novel approach, i.e. improvement of Vacuum Ultra Violet VUV emission efficiency, different from the general way to improve the transmission efficiency of visible emission. These technologies have been applied to our products successfully.
