The optical compensation mechanisms and the designing concepts of the discotic negative birefringence film, which realized the wide viewing angle for TN‐LCDS, are clarified. Two factors, the relative direction of the slow axes and the retardation values, are important for understanding the optical effects of the discotic film. The cause of the color‐shift in the horizontal directions is also explained. The combination of the discotic film with the π cell drastically improves the color‐shift problem. The viewing angle problem of polarizers is also discussed.
