The propagation of light is described in terms of the amplitudes of the four propagating modes. Closed form analytic expressions are obtained for the 4×4 propagation matrices, based on exact solutions for the eigenmodes in general homogeneous media(5). The proposed method may be useful for calculating the transmittance of liquid crystal displays and other optical elements. We illustrate the method by calculating the transmittance of a planar cholesteric LC cell and the Kerr rotation of a lossy and optically active magneto‐optical layer.
