Ions contained in polar LC substances are characterized from absorption current measurements. Fluorinated and cyano LC substances were well characterized with regard to the Δ∍ values and ions contained, when used in cells with alignment materials. The results were applied to mixture design for use in low‐voltage operation TFT‐TN and TFT‐IPS LCDs, confirming the superiority of fluorinated LC substances for TFT‐TN‐LCDs and providing a new concept of mixtures composed of both fluorinated and cyano substances for a TFT‐IPS‐LCD use, featuring fast switching, low threshold voltage, and good voltage holding.
