Numerical optimization routines along with characterization tools are used to systematically design a viewing angle compensation method for liquid crystal displays. The resulting configuration provides excellent gray level separation and a 50:1 contrast ratio that extends ±45° horizontally and −15° to +50° vertically. Measured performance and design methods are presented.
