A new retardation configuration (ARJ) was designed, built and tested. A comparison to the Fuji‐WV‐o‐mode shows much a improved viewing envelope in the horizontal and vertical direction. The display gray level separation is very good and maintains no inversion over ±60°H/ −15°/+40°V range. The optical parameters of both modes are described and compared.
