Emittance techniques are extended and applied to the problem of focus‐tracking — the variation of focus voltage with beam current. The resulting tool isolates and quantifies contributions to tracking, provides guidance on beneficial modifications in the triode and lens regions, and enables gun engineers to achieve designs with improved overall performance.
