Abstract Field‐sequential illumination is one of the candidate methods for realizing color‐filterless full‐color LCDs. The transient characteristics of red, green, and blue fluorescent lamps are investigated, including those of lamps newly developed for this purpose, using several specifically selected phosphors. Conventional red and green phosphor are not fast enough, but blue phosphor and the proposed red ((Sr, Mg) 3 (PO 4 ) 2 :Sn 2+ ) and green (Y 3 (Al, Ga) 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ ) phosphors are fast enough.
