In this paper, we present an report on the effect of JPEG coding scheme on the perceived quality of 3D images. The general functionality of 3D image compression is discussed, we show that the application of lossy compression to the 3D image pairs has less drawback than to the 2D image of the same scence, two degraded image pairs can give more information than an original 2D one. Studies of different compression rates on the test images have been carried out, evaluation of the processed image pairs is done by the adoption of the CCIR subjective assessment method, some useful results are described to avoid the visible image degradation and the visual strain.
