This paper discusses the methods that the Military Aircraft & Aerostructures Division of British Aerospace Defence have developed over the last two decades to specify and assess cockpit displays. It is primarily concerned with single seat fast jet aircraft though it could also apply to any display applications where high levels of ambient illumination are present. The specification method is based around a modelling technique referred to as the Perceived Just Noticeable Difference (PJND) method. The assessment method is based around a purpose built ‘lighting’ chamber.
