Abstract The author proposes an illumination optics system for LC‐projection displays to improve optical efficiency. It uses a pair of special lenses whose surface profiles are determined so that the circular cross section of the incident light beam is transformed into a rectangular one. Nonlinear least squares fitting and ray‐tracing is combined to determine the surface profile parameters. The design and the results of the performance simulation are presented. The method is expected to provide high‐efficiency, well‐collimated illumination.
