In order to assess the performance limitations of cholesteric polarisers in photoluminescent liquid crystal displays, we have calculated their optical characteristics using a 4×4 matrix formalism combined with the concept of integrated transmission. Fixed‐pitch polarisers are considered under controlled illumination conditions. High extinction and transmission can be achieved using narrow‐band low‐divergence illumination.
