Reducing the light‐leakage caused by domain formation around spacers in IPS (in‐plane switching) TFT‐LCDs is investigated. It is found that the light‐leakage depends on the spacer material and surface alignment of the liquid crystal molecules on the spacers. High contrast ratio of over 200 is demonstrated by aligning liquid crystal molecules parallel to the spacer surface.
