Comparison of techniques in modeling of light propagation at oblique incidence in complex liquid crystal structures is performed. We compare the optical modeling results calculated using liquid crystal material properties along the ray with the more common method of using the material properties along the normal. To show the difference between the two methods, two application examples are considered. Substantial differences in optical performance are observed at wide viewing angles, particularly in the transmitted intensity.
