Abstract The aim of the present paper is to perform a thorough and systematic survey of the optical properties of colloid liquid crystal composites with a view to assessing their potential to enable innovations or improvements in display devices. An introduction to the structure and properties of these materials is presented and applications for specific device types (twist‐nematic, guest‐host, and cholesteric) are considered.
