The temporal variations of the electric field in a surface‐type AC (alternating current) PDP (plasma display panel) cell were measured using the laser‐induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The wall voltage showed dynamically different behavior dependent upon the discharge condition during the pulse‐on and the pulse‐ off period. The wall voltage decreased as the MgO surface of the panel was deteriorated by the discharge and this phenomenon caused the increase of the minimum sustain voltage.
