Chemical precipitation techniques allow the preparation of a wide variety of materials, in the form of perfect single crystals, to be produced in the size range of 50–100nm. The properties of three such compounds, Y 2 O 3 :Eu, Zn 2 SiO 4 :Mn and Y 2 SiO 5 :Ce, are discussed. Results under electron excitation show that luminescence efficiencies of up to 10 lm.W −1 are attainable under 1–2kV excitation.
