A wide‐format, 29.6‐inch AM LCD using MVA‐LCD mode for HDTV applications has been developed. Key technologies to achieve excellent features of high brightness, high contrast ratio, ultra wide viewing angle, fast response for whole gray levels, high color gamut, light weight and thin shape are summarized. The future trend of large‐size LCD TVs and the challenge for performance enhancement are also discussed.
