Abstract We have developed an ultra‐super large TFT‐LCD which has a 52‐inch diagonal size. This magnificent LCD has the features of 1920 × 1080 (16:9) resolution for full HDTV image, 500nit brightness, 75% color gamut and 12msec response time at all the grays. The size of the panel (52‐inch) is determined by the maximum efficiency of one of our fifth generation lines (glass size: 1000 × 1200mm). To overcome the limitation of size in photo‐lithography equipment, a new stitching‐free technology was applied in both TFT and C/F side. And the super‐IPS mode was used as a wide viewing angle technology because it is suitable for such a large panel. In this paper, we present issues on both the fabrication and characteristics of 52‐inch TFTLCD.
