This paper describes an investigation on the application of Optiva thin‐crystal film (TCF) coatings for the correction of color errors and color variations in liquid crystal displays (LCDs). A yellow TCF polarizer coating was developed as a supplementary color correction coating for LCDs. Modeling and simulation of a normally‐white, film‐compensated AMLCD with and without the supplementary coating revealed that the yellow TCF polarizer coating neutralized the chromaticity of the display black point and dramatically reduced the migration of white point chromaticity across the gray scale range while leaving the display contrast ratio and transmission essentially unchanged. Display evaluations have confirmed the results of these simulations.
