Dependence of luminous efficiency in the Y 2 O 3 : Eu‐Gd 2 O3: Eu solid solutions which are highly promising for application in FED was studied. Their volt‐luminance characteristics have been explained on the basis of the sensibilization effects of the Eu 3+ emission with Gd 3+ ions and by decrease of the penetration depth of the primary electrons into the phosphor. This allowed to determine a thickness of a “dead layer” and to show its dependence on the phosphor synthesis conditions.
