The possibility of obtaining a wider and symmetric isocontrast region around normal incidence in the polar diagram for Normally Black (NB) and Normally white (NW) active matrix TN modulated PLLCDs is investigated. Using an extended Jones matrix approach and Poincare sphere representation for an obliquely incident beam, the effects of several compensation means are studied for TN‐PLLCD. We find that NB TN modulated PLLCD shows a better integrated contrast ratio (ICR) than that for NW over all collimation angles and is more responsive to compensation.
