Abstract Stokes and anti‐Stokes emission from Eu 3+ doped lattices has been observed on excitation with the 632.8 nm line of a He/Ne laser. These lattices include Y 2 O 3 , YNbO 4 and YVO 4 . A test for Eu 3+ in Eu 2+ phosphors has been developed enabling the assessment of purity of Eu 2+ containing long persistence and plasma phosphors. This has implications for new synthetic routes to these phosphors.
