Abstract A reflective liquid crystal display driven by MIM elements on a plastic substrate was successfully developed. A new MIM element structure was designed to accommodate shrinkage or expansion of the substrate. It was found very important to manage the environmental conditions of the plastic substrate during the fabrication processes. The monochromatic display performance was measured to be 17 % for the reflectance of the white state and to be 8.5: 1 for the contrast ratio. The response time was also found to be 20 ms.
